Construction

Construction Autre

The construction is foam sandwich. The core is polyurethane foam 10mm thick except of some large flatter areas of deck which is 20mm and the transom which is thicker still. The GRP layup on the outside is 1ozCSM, 2 layers 300 gsm unidirectional roving laid diagonally at 90 degrees finished with 1oz CM and filler to fair up. On the inside it is similar but the roving is 600gsm cloth. In higher stress areas such as the bow and keel and around the lifting keel housing there is no foam and the hull is increased in thickness with extra layers of 600gsm cloth. Where fittings are present on the deck the foam is removed and replaced with solid material to take screws or through bolts. There is no deck seam around the gunwale as the GRP is overlapped 30cm down the side. The internal bulkheads and longitudinal panels are all constructed in the same way an laminated into the hull and deck producing a very strong and rigid composite boat. This has never been significantly damaged since she was launched.

The hydraulic cylinder for the keel lifting has had all new seals and washers fitted and the hydraulic pump in the cockpit has been replaced with a new one.

The outside paintwork has all been redone with two part Epifane polyurethane paint above the waterline
Coppercoat antifouling below the water line.

All the internal lining was refitted using a backing of 3mm neoprene - 2018
All the wiring was replaced with tinned copper - 2018
All lights LED fittings - 2018

Commentaires du Broker

OWNER VERY KEEN TO SELL AND OPEN TO OFFER!
A very cute trailer sailer appearing to have been well cared for by her owner who built her.She was out of the water for 15 years before 2018 when she was relaunched after being completely refurbished.

Notes from the owner:

This yacht is the same size and style as a Sonata. She was home built in foam sandwich GRP designed and built by a Naval Architect. She was first launched in 1978. She has sailed on many long coastal voyages and raced successfully. She was laid up in 2005 and completely refitted with cabin lining, all new tinned copper wiring, led lights, new rigging with furlex roller headstay and a new main and foresail. She was relaunched in2018. She has a road trailer with cradle to launch her.

The boat was designed along the lines of a Hunter Sonata with the lifting keel design similar to the Seal. She was designed by my brother Robin Smallwood, a Naval Architect, and built in my back garden in Taunton with his help. At this time Robin was working in Vosper Thorneycroft in Southampton building the first fibreglass Minesweepers for the Admiralty so was conversant with the latest GRP technology. The maiden voyage was from Hamble to the Channel Islands with a crew of 5 one week after she was launched. Since then she has been cruised and raced all over the UK. She has always sailed far more than she has motored as she will sail in the lightest of breezes and even withstand strong winds well reefed down.
Notable voyages have been:- From Poole to the Scilly Isles and back with our respective families on board,From Barry round the coast of Wales to Anglesey where she raced in the Menai Straits Regatta Fortnight and back,From Neyland Marina in Milford Sound along the south coast of Ireland to Kinsale and back,Towed on her trailer up to Loch Creran off Loch Linnhe for a cruise up the coast of Scotland through the Sound of Mull to the south end of Skye and the back down through the inner islands to the Crinnan Canal and then around the outer Forth of Firth to Greenock where she was moored for the summer. This was over 3 weeks. Her most notable racing success was in the Menai Straits Fortnight Offshore Class which she won in 1988One of these races was in gusting F7 with a crew of 5 well reefed down and with the 70% jib. She is rated between fin keel Sonata and a swing keel. The batteries for the electric engine will last for about 3-4 hours driving the motor depending on the speed of the boat.
