The engine room is situated below the pilot house floor and is accessed through two lifting floor panels. You can stand upright, sit next to or beside the engine or even get under it. There is easy and comfortable access to everything and is well lit on all sides. Everything is new, clean, dry and well laid out for access and maintenance.

The main items in the engine room comprise the engine, generator, watermaker, calorifier, greywater tank and all of their ancillary equipment.

Under deck valves prevent theft of fuel and ingress of water to the tanks. There are two 600L tanks, baffled with Weka inspection hatches in each compartment enabling easy inspection of the interior of the tanks (which are currently immaculate). Each tank has a moisture collecting sump and test points to drain off any future moisture or contamination and to sample fuel.

The tanks can be run separately, one for the engine and one for genset and central/water heating or run together.

The engine is fed by twin banks of water separators, filters and electric pumps that can be switched over at a moment’s notice should a filter become blocked or a pump fail. Glass bowls for the water separators give visual indication of problems. A suction gauge indicates the condition of the filter in operation. A new gearbox was fitted in 2013.

Contruction

There are many pre-conceived opinions surrounding ferro-cement constructed boats and it is true that there are some dreadful examples languishing in boat yards around the world. This boat is most definitely not one of them. She was built by a marine engineer to the exacting standards of a Hartley/Sampson design, arguably one of the most successful ferro-cement designers of their time. Walking around the hull, you are not immediately aware that she is of ferro-cement construction.

This Samson C-Lord is a ferro-cement hull and deck built using the ‘Hartley Truss Frame’ method covered in layers of mesh to create the hull form. The ferro-cement is a very rich specialist mortar, 2 part sulphate resistant cement to 1 part sand and includes pozzolan (pulverised fuel or volcanic ash) material which is very fine, enabling the mix to fill any voids.

This method of construction provides strength in a relatively thin structure with high impact resistance and flexibility. During her history, some sections have been cut out for additional sea cocks or windows etc. On each occasion there has never been any signs of rust.

The whole hull is coated with Jotamastic 87 two-pack epoxy and below the waterline further coats of zinc based tie primer and antifoul. Above the waterline the hull is painted with Hempel Enamel.

The interior of the hull is insulated throughout with 13mm closed cell nitrile foam sheet, an effective prevention of condensation

The deck surface is teak which is glued in place, no screws are used. The deck is uncluttered with wide side decks and therefore safe to move around. The cockpit is spacious and deep, easily seating 6 if required. The sprayhood and bimini can be joined together with additional canvas and, with the use of additional side panels, a fully enclosed conservatory can be created, effectively giving you an extra cabin. Very useful at anchor.

This particular vessel has completed at least one circumnavigation and the hull is as good now as it was when first built, in fact stronger as the cement continues to cure with age.

Forward of the saloon are two identical forward cabins each with an upper and lower bunk with high density foam mattresses and lee cloths. The two cabins share the forward heads, with manual wc and shower, each having its own access door. As with the rest of the boat there is masses of storage.

There is access to the anchor locker, via watertight collision bulkhead, from the forward heads. There is plenty of storage space for anchor chain, warp and other sundries.

There are two black water holding tanks, one for each head and one grey water tank which is located in the engine room.

Commentaires du Broker

Stunning is the only adjective I can use to describe this boat. The minute I stepped aboard I had the feeling of expanding horizons. This feeling was further enhanced when I descended into the accommodation. The hand crafted interior is beautifully made from teak and sapele and varnished throughout. It is clear that much thought has gone into the design of the accommodation and that a huge amount of care and attention has been lavished on her during her current ownership. I have been aboard many modern large boats where you have a cavernous saloon and standard sized cabins. The proportions of each living space here are such that you are never aware of the overall size of the boat from wherever you stand. The level and standard of equipment is outstanding and you could spend weeks or even months at sea without needing to put into port. Clearly this boat is designed to go places and has already completed at least one circumnavigation, and that should be her destiny. We think it highly unlikely that you will find a modern boat of this quality in terms of workmanship and level of equipment for less than £500,000, if indeed, you find one at all, making this boat, at this price, unbelievable value. Yes, it is ferro-cement and we recommend you do your research into this construction method, you may be pleasantly surprised, I was!

I love this boat, it really has to be seen to be appreciated, and the details given here only serve as an introduction. The current owner has put together a very detailed brochure, a copy of which is available on request to those who have a serious interest.

If you are planning a major adventure which involves leaving these shores, this boat has to be a serious contender. We feel that once you have seen her, the bar will be so high you won’t want to look elsewhere
